Getting Unstuck

Any coach can tell you, getting a player unstuck starts with assessing whether the problem is one of three things: a capacity issue, a skill issue, or a knowledge issue. All three are legitimate, and knowing which problem you’re facing is the difference between getting unstuck quickly or facing lasting frustration.

All of these factors ultimately ladder up to motivation. Does the player have the desire or will to change – to get unstuck?

The questions we have to ask ourselves as leaders in fostering change and solving problems are empathy questions. We need to understand how our family members, teammates, or group participants see a variety of behavior change factors:

  • Why is the behavior important to me?

  • Why do I want to change?

  • Why now?

Knowing these answers will also simplify the path we take to create culture, because it allows us to speak to the emotional aspects of behavior change.
