Why People Really Love Culture
“I love the culture!”
It’s what we say when we describe what we like, but I don’t believe the majority of us know why we say it. Of course, we think we do. We think we enjoy the energy and appeal of culture. But what does that even mean?
The feeling? The status? The momentum?
Culture gets short-changed too often. It’s mistaken for adventure and activity. Sometimes it’s considered atmosphere or tone. While these are all partially true, the truth is people like culture for the benefit it provides them.
When culture is established, it expresses itself in our reflexes. Culture is automatic by definition. You don’t have to think about it – it’s our way of life. At home, in the office, and everywhere else. Good or bad, it’s the way of life that’s currently established.
The real value comes when culture is aligned with our goals and desires. This is where we benefit, and it’s the reason we say, “I love the culture!”
If your culture is one of accountability, you won’t have to chase anyone down to have a conversation about performance.
If your culture includes affirming others, you won’t wonder going into weekly check-ins how your team is feeling.
If your culture prioritizes team, you won’t have to encouraged collaboration as often.
A well-established culture will do some heavy-lifting for you. This is why we love culture.
Stop and observe your culture for a few minutes and ask yourself what benefit your culture is providing. You’ll be surprised at the value that is built-in...if you’ve got a culture you love, that is.
