Why People Really Work with You
About 10 years ago I heard Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle Ted Talk. I agree with him.
However, I don’t always think people act on what’s best for them or what’s most true. I believe they act on what they understand the fastest. In most cases, what people understand and align with in a business isn’t why. It would be nice if they did, but they don’t. And it’s not because aligning with why isn't best, it is. It’s because people don’t take the time to understand why. They’re moving too fast and it’s not a priority.
As an intermediate step in getting to why, go beyond what, and focus on how.
How isn’t necessarily why people choose to work with you, but it is the reason they come back to work with you again.
What you do solves a problem. But how you solve that problem is what makes you unique and valuable to a customer or client.
What you do is help your client reach more people. So do a lot of other people. There are a hundred different ways to do this. How you help them reach more people is:
Running digital ads on Facebook
Dropping door hangers in targeted zip codes
Hosting meet-and-greet events at lunch
Sending a mailer with a promo code to register online
Baking every prospective client a cake and hand-delivering it
This is why they will work with you again…assuming you’re any good at it to begin with.
Customers and clients can be convinced to work with us once because they heard about what we do. They’ll keep coming back when how we help them aligns with their preferences, goals, and style.
Developing a mindset that goes beyond what to how is the next step in getting customers and clients aligned with why…and the next step in building a culture of results.
