The Most Common Mistake We Make Creating Culture
Culture is fun.
That’s about the extent of what most people think when they consider why culture is so buzzy these days. To clarify, culture can be fun, but fun is not a requirement or a qualifier. Sure, we take a notice when someone tells us they have a vending machine at work that’s free for all the employees. But don’t mistake “desirable” or “impressive” for culture. Culture is how behaviors, beliefs, and values come together to create your way of life.
Moreover, culture is the most underutilized tool in creating workplace fulfillment.
There are more surveys and articles available with one search online that highlight the value of having a healthy culture. However, we still think of culture as “a cool place to work” more than a tool to foster great people and successful organizations. The problem is few people understand how to actually influence or change their culture.
Stop focusing only on the “fun” or “cool” and start prioritizing fulfilling, encouraging, affirming, life-giving, and how your culture enhances the lives of your people.
And if you can make it fun along the way, I think your team would think that's pretty nice too.
